Assign homework

In this article, we'll cover how to assign homework to a student.

Who this is for: teachers and managers

Available to: teachers on all subscriptions. Managers and owners on multi-teacher subscriptions.

Before you start: to assign homework at the close of the Classroom, a lesson you've launched, with your students enrolled in it. See how to launch a lesson and enroll students. Assigning from a student's profile needs nothing.

Assign homework as a teacher

Homework lets your students practice a lesson on their own after class, and shows you how much of it landed. They find it on their To Do tab whenever they log in.

Assign homework when you close the Classroom

Closing the Classroom is where you send the homework for the lesson you just taught. It arrives pre-selected for every student enrolled in the lesson when you close it.

Important: homework goes to the students enrolled in the lesson at the moment you close it, including anyone you enrolled part-way through. Closing the Classroom offers the homework; it doesn't send it on its own.

Important: always finish with Close classroom in the Actions Bar. Closing the browser tab or using the back button leaves the lesson open and skips the homework prompt.

  1. At the end of the lesson, in the Actions Bar, select Close classroom. The Assign Homework screen opens.
  2. Every enrolled student is selected by default. To leave a student out, clear the checkbox beside their name. Deselect all clears them all at once.
  3. Optional: set a due date.
  4. Select Assign Homework. Nothing sends until you do. To close the lesson without sending anything, select Close without assigning.

Result: the homework appears on each selected student's To Do tab.

Important: when a due date passes, the student loses access to that homework. Leave the date blank if you want them to keep it.

Note: on the last lesson in a unit, the screen is titled Assign Homework and Unit Check and adds a second column for the Unit Check. You can assign one, both or neither, and the button reads Assign Selected Items. See how to assign a Unit Check.

Assign homework from a student's profile

Use this when you taught the lesson but skipped the homework at the time.

  1. Go to the Student Management Panel.
  2. Select your student's name.
  3. Find the lesson you want to assign the homework for.
  4. In the actions column, select the blue plus (+) icon.
  5. Select Assign homework.

Result: the homework appears on the student's To Do tab.

Assign homework again for extra practice

Reassign a lesson's homework when a student needs another go at the same material.

  1. Launch the lesson again.
  2. Enroll the student.
  3. Select Close classroom.
  4. Select Assign Homework.

Result: the student gets a second attempt at the same homework, and both attempts are kept.

To see every attempt a student has made:

  1. Go to the Student Management Panel.
  2. Select the student's name.
  3. Select the green clock icon to list the attempts.
  4. Select the blue eye icon to open one attempt.

Result: you see each attempt separately, with the answers the student gave.

Assign a course as a manager

A course is a set of lessons and their homework packaged together. Assign one and the students get every lesson in it, plus the homework that goes with each.

  1. Select Management to open the Enterprise Management Panel.
    • If you also have the teacher role, open the Management menu and select Enterprise.
  2. Select the Students card or the Classes card.
  3. Select the box beside each student or class that should receive the course.
  4. In Bulk Actions, select Assign courses.
  5. Select Submit.
  6. On the next screen, select a teacher.
  7. Select a course.
  8. Select Apply.

Result: every student you selected can open the course lessons and their homework.

Manage courses as a manager

Start each of these from the Enterprise Management Panel with the Courses card open.

Create a course

  1. Select Create my own course.
  2. Add the lessons you want to include.
  3. Enter a name for the course.
  4. Enter a description.
  5. Select Save & close.

Result: the course appears in your course list, ready to assign.

Edit a course

  1. For the course you want to change, select View & customize.
  2. Make your changes. You can rename the course, edit the description, add or remove lessons and reorder them.
  3. Select Save & close.

Result: your course list shows the changes.

Duplicate a course

  1. For the course you want to copy, select Duplicate.
  2. Change the name, description or lessons.
  3. Select Save & close.

Result: the copy appears in your course list alongside the original.

Delete a course

  1. For the course you want to remove, select the trash icon.
  2. Select Delete to confirm.

Result: the course no longer appears in your course list.

Important: only courses you customized can be deleted. Off2Class courses cannot.

Note: deleting a course does not remove it from students already assigned to it. They keep the lessons and homework inside it. The course only leaves your course list.

Things to know

Note: the answer key becomes available to you as soon as the homework is assigned. You don't have to wait for the student to start it. This is the teacher's answer key, not something the student is given.

Tip: to run a flipped classroom, enroll your students in the lesson and select Close classroom before you teach it. That gives them the slides to preview. Assign the homework at the same time, or wait until class begins.

Note: many Off2Class homework assignments accept student audio recordings, so students can practice speaking outside class.
