Assign the Placement Test

In this article, we'll cover how to pick the right Placement Test and send it to a student or a class.

Who this is for: teachers and managers

Available to: teachers and managers on all subscriptions. On free accounts, only the grammar section is available. Assigning from the Enterprise Management Panel needs a paid multi-teacher subscription.

Before you start: students need active accounts. Before a manager can send a Placement Test, each student needs at least one assigned teacher.

Which test to send

Off2Class has two Placement Tests. Both measure a student's English proficiency, show you which domains are weakest and recommend lessons at the end.

  • Standard Placement Test: a comprehensive assessment of at least 100 questions, weighted evenly across the domains you select. It also builds a Learning Plan, which you can customize and use to track what you've covered.
  • Adaptive Placement Test: a shorter assessment that adjusts to the student's answers as they go. It doesn't build a Learning Plan.

Off2Class recommends the Adaptive Placement Test in most cases. The Standard Placement Test identifies more of a student's fossilized errors, but it takes much longer to complete.

 

As a teacher

  1. In the top navigation bar, open the Teacher menu.
  2. Select Placement Test.
  3. Select Standard Placement Test or Adaptive Placement Test.
  4. Select the domains you want to test.
    • Standard Placement Test: grammar is already selected. Add any of reading, listening, writing or speaking.
    • Adaptive Placement Test: select any of grammar, reading, listening, writing and speaking.
  5. Select Students to test individuals, or Classes to test a whole class.
  6. From the dropdown menu, select the student or class you want to test.
  7. Select Send.

Result: the test is sent. Off2Class emails you when the student finishes it, and the results appear on the student's profile.

To send the test again, repeat these steps.

 

As a manager

Important: if you selected classes, you can only send the Standard Placement Test. To send the Adaptive Placement Test, select students instead.
  1. Select Management to open the Enterprise Management Panel.
    • If you also have the teacher role, open the Management menu and select Enterprise.
  2. Select Students to test individuals, or Classes to test whole classes.
  3. Select the box beside each student or class you want to test. You can also select multiple students by email.
  4. In Bulk Actions, select Select action.
  5. Select Assign Placement Test.
  6. Select Submit.
  7. On the next page, select the teacher to send the test through.
  8. From Select a test type, choose Standard Placement Test or Adaptive Placement Test.
  9. Under Select the sections to include, select the domains you want to test.
    • Standard Placement Test: grammar is already selected. Add any of reading, listening, writing or speaking.
    • Adaptive Placement Test: nothing is preselected. Select any of grammar, reading, listening, writing and speaking.
  10. If any of your students are in more than one class, select the class for each of them.
  11. Select Apply.

Result: the test is assigned to every student you selected, and to every student in the classes you selected. The test appears when they log in to Off2Class. They also get an email if email notifications are on, which they are by default. Every teacher assigned to those students can see the results.

Important: on the Standard Placement Test, you cannot add the other sections later, separately from grammar. Pick them before you send. On the Adaptive Placement Test you can add sections individually afterward.

 

Things to know

Important: a student you send a Placement Test to takes up one of your student licenses, the same as any other student. Once you have used every license on your plan, you can keep sending Placement Tests to students beyond that limit.

Note: there is no full test to log in and preview, because the questions adjust as the student answers. To see what your students will see, read example questions from both Placement Tests.

Note: to check what the test looks like from the student's side, log in as the student.

Note: to test someone who is not on your account yet, select a prospective student and add them as you send. A prospective student can receive one test before their account is activated.
