How can I assign a placement test to a student/class?

In this article, we'll cover how to assign a placement test to a class, a student, or a prospective student.

The Off2Class placement test is great to send to new students so that you can get an excellent idea of both their language strengths and their weaknesses so that you can design a customized course for them. Our placement test will match every error that your student makes to one of the lessons in our lesson library for a personalized course.

To get to the placement test, hover over the teacher menu in the top left of the lesson library page and click 'placement test'

The next page gives you some basic information about the placement test, including some sample questions.

Click the green button at the top of the screen that says 'Assign Test'

You can either assign the placement test to a class, an existing student, or a prospective student.

Assign the placement test to a class

  1. Select Classes.
  2. Select the class to send the placement test to.
  3. Continue to "Choose which elements of the placement test to send".

Assign the placement test to an existing student

  1. Select Students.
  2. Select the student you want to send the test to from the drop-down menu.

You can send the test to students more than once, because the test is dynamic, pulling off a database of over 800 questions, so they are unlikely to get the same test twice. However, we don't recommend assigning the test too often, as this can demotivate the student. Regular assessments are a better gauge of student progress.

Assign the placement test to a new or prospective student

Click the green 'A Prospective Student' button and fill in the information on the next screen.

Note: It is possible to send placement tests over and above your student capacity.

Enter student details

  1. Name: The Student’s full name.
  2. Email: The Student’s email.
  3. Password: Used to login to Off2Class. Must be at least 8 characters long.
  4. Student Interface Language: This setting translates the text on the student’s home page to aid in navigation. All lesson content remains in English.
  5. Send a Copy of the Login Credentials to Student: If toggled to “Yes”, Off2Class will email the student with their login details. By default, this is set to "No", in which case you will need to give the username and password to your student)

Click 'Add Student' once done

Choose which elements of the placement test to send

  1. The Grammar section is compulsory every time the test is assigned, as these results determine the level for the following sections.
  2. Choose which sections you'd like to add to the test - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, keeping in mind these cannot be added individually at a later stage, separate from the grammar portion.
  3. Note the estimated time to complete the test adjusts according to the sections added

    2. Listening - 20-minute time limit
    3. Reading - 20-minute time limit
    4. Writing - 15-minute time limit
    5. Speaking - 5-minute time limit
  4. If the student is part of a class, the class name will appear here.

Student(s) will receive an email letting them know a placement test has been assigned if you selected to "send login credentials to your student".

When students log into their Off2Class account, they will find the placement test assignment at the bottom of their To Do page

When students complete their test you'll receive an email notification. You don't have to wait for the notification, as you can review the test results from the student's profile page at any time.

Note: Because the placement test is very detailed, if your student is a beginner, rather start them on the A0 or beginner material directly without assigning them the placement test.
