How can I review my students' placement test results?

In this article, we'll cover how to review your students' placement test results

Once the student submits the Placement Test, the teacher receives an email informing them that the test is complete. However, it's also possible to locate your student's test results under their profile page.

To locate the test results start in the Student Management Panel and click the student's name

This opens the student's profile page.

Click on 'Show Results', in the first row

Note that clicking the padlock icon reveals the test results to your student. You can choose to keep the results locked or open. It might be good to keep the results locked until you've had time to review them together with your student, as the results may be difficult for a student to understand without you.

On the test results page, on the top right, you can see the student's grammar proficiency level

The test results on the right of the page show you -

  1. Grammar proficiency level
  2. Can-Do statements for this level
  3. Listening proficiency - either supports the grammar level or not
  4. Reading proficiency - either supports the grammar level or not
  5. Writing proficiency - scored by the teacher
  6. Speaking proficiency - scored by the teacher

The Grammar test results are in the center of the screen

This chart shows the number of questions that the student answered

  • correctly, in green
  • incorrectly, in red
  • indicated 'I don't know', in yellow.

Beneath this table is the Gap Analysis

This is the most useful part of the Placement Test.

This displays your student's real errors, and

  1. the level at which the error occurred
  2. the question of the error
  3. the student's answer
  4. the correct answer
  5. the recommended lesson from the Off2Class library that addresses the student’s knowledge gap

As you scroll down you see that the mistakes start at lower levels and go down through the higher levels. All of these lessons are automatically added to the student's learning plan.

In the listening section, the student is given a listening prompt reflecting the level they scored in the grammar section

We always give the student something to look at for the listening prompt. That way it tests actual listening ability, not simply memorization. Press play to hear exactly what your student heard and beneath this, you can see the questions that your student answered incorrectly. There is also a note telling you whether their listening proficiency is on par with their grammar proficiency.

The reading is similar

Your student receives a level-appropriate reading text that you can also view to see their errors.

For the writing section, the student is given a level-appropriate prompt

You, as the teacher, can read what they typed and make an evaluation to determine if this is on par with their grammar, speaking, and listening ability.

The speaking is the same

The student is given a speaking prompt and then the browser asks to record their microphone. They will speak so you'll hear their real voice as they attempt to answer the question.

On the left of the screen, are some actions you can take

  1. Click the padlock to give your student access to the results.
  2. Print the Placement Test results.
  3. For subscribers with whitelabel, create a certificate displaying your student's grammar level. Your logo appears in place of the O2C logo.

The placement test is one of the most powerful tools that you have at your disposal because you can use the recommended lessons that form the basis of the student's learning plan to generate a customized course without expending any extra effort. We highly recommend that you encourage all of your students to take the placement test as early as possible after meeting them. You can also assign the placement test later, at the end of the course, to measure progress, as the test is different each time it's attempted.

Note that if you change the default framework in your lesson library (CEFR, WIDA, TELPAS, CA ELD, or NY), this change is reflected in the students’ results and on their certificate.

If you have CEFR set as your standard, your placement test results will be displayed as A1-C1.  If your standard is set to WIDA the placement test results will be displayed as Pre-entering to Bridging-Reaching, and so on.
