(Beta) How can I learn more about Writing Auto-Scoring?

In this article, we'll cover information that beta participants need to know about our Writing Auto-Scoring feature.

Writing Auto-Scoring is currently in beta. The feature is only available to select beta participants who have been invited and confirmed their participation. As with all betas, hiccups are expected. Beta participants should reference the shared instructions for reporting feedback and bugs.

Before reading this article, you'll want to have a solid understanding of how homework currently works and what role Writing Auto-Scoring plays in our 2025 roadmap, so it is recommended that you read the three related articles above before continuing with this article.

Today, free-text responses are not auto-scored, but Writing Auto-Scoring changes that by using AI to score and leave feedback on free-text homework responses. Teachers are still in full control because nothing AI-generated will be visible to students before a teacher reviews it. If desired, teachers can change the scores and the specific feedback the AI leaves.

How it works

Navigate to the homework you want to review and find the page with the writing questions.

  1. Score: The score the AI provided. You can change the score.
  2. Feedback icon: The robot icon showcasing the feedback was originally generated by AI. You can update the feedback.
  3. Student response: The response the AI is evaluating.

Click on the score to change it.

After closing the classroom and marking the homework as reviewed, your student can access both the score and the feedback.

  1. Score: The score the AI provided and you reviewed.
  2. Feedback icon: The icon showcasing that there is feedback for the student to review. The student can hover over the icon to review the feedback.
  3. Student response: The response the student left for the homework question.
