Off2Class Can-do Descriptors Index

A spreadsheet breaking down the can-do descriptors for each Off2Class proficiency level by domain.

What are Off2Class Can-do Descriptors?

Off2Class Can-do Descriptors are simple statements that describe what a student is able to do at each proficiency level and across domains. Unlike test scores that are often opaque and difficult to interpret, Off2Class Can-do Descriptors describe a student’s real abilities. For example:

“I can express opinions and give reasons.”

“I can ask for help in an emergency.”

Why are they useful?

Off2Class Can-do Descriptors clearly summarize what a student is able to do right now and what they need to work on next in order to get to the next level. This makes language teaching and learning easier for all:

  • For students, they show achievable goals and highlight progress.
  • For teachers, they help with measuring practical skills and planning future learning.
  • For employers and schools, they show real-world ability.

What is the Off2Class Can-do Descriptors Index?

The Off2Class Can-do Descriptors Index is a structured, searchable collection of all the can-do descriptors that make up each Off2Class proficiency level. Teachers and students can see at a glance which language skills they have already mastered and which they need to focus on at their current proficiency level.

How to use it

Simply open the Off2Class Can-do Descriptors Index and select the tab that corresponds to the student’s level. This will display all of the can-do descriptors that students at that level are typically working towards mastering. These should be the focus of the student’s language learning. To see can-do descriptors that students at that level have typically already mastered, open earlier tabs.

Note that in order to filter, sort, and otherwise edit the Off2Class Can-do Descriptors Index, a copy must be downloaded and saved locally (File>>>Download>>>Select file type).
