What research supports the effectiveness of Off2Class?

Causal impact, authentic testimony, continuous accountability—what the data says about Off2Class and student outcomes.

Introduction

Off2Class is grounded in rigorous evaluation and evidence. Below is a summary of the most compelling data we have on student impact, supplemented by qualitative insights from our focus groups.

1. Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT): Student Achievement

In 2024–25, Off2Class sponsored an independent Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) to measure the impact of its curriculum on English learners in grades 6–12.

Students who used Off2Class showed statistically significant gains in English proficiency compared to control groups, as measured by WIDA ACCESS Reading scores.

Key highlights include:

  • Average gain: +20.8 WIDA scaled score points in one school year — more than double the national average.
  • Cohort: Middle and high school english learners (WIDA Reading 1.0–2.5) participating in targeted Foundational Literacy and English Language Development interventions.
  • Setting: Implemented in real classrooms with district educators and tutors delivering instruction using Off2Class.

These results provide causal evidence that Off2Class improves literacy and English proficiency outcomes for adolescent English learners.

EdWorkingPapers publishes cutting-edge education research to promote transparency, replication, and timely dissemination of new findings.

Also covered by New America, highlighting the study’s rigor and implications for EL tutoring.

2. Next Steps: ESSA Tier I Submission

Off2Class’ RCT meets the design criteria for Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Tier I: Strong Evidence — the highest level of research evidence recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) — the federal initiative that independently reviews education studies for ESSA alignment — is not currently accepting new submissions for Tier I evidence review.

Once the WWC reopens applications, Off2Class will submit our RCT for formal review and certification.

This process ensures that our research is evaluated by independent standards of methodological rigor and transparency, further affirming Off2Class as a verified, evidence-based intervention for multilingual learners.

3. Focus Group Insights: Voices from the Classroom

Complementing the RCT, teacher and student focus groups highlighted how and why Off2Class drives improvement:

  • Greater student engagement and confidence in reading and writing.
  • Stronger connection between lessons and individual student needs.
  • Teachers reported clearer visibility into student progress and easier lesson planning.
  • Students expressed that lessons were “just right” for their level and helped them see real growth.

These qualitative insights bring the RCT findings to life — showing how the product produces its statistically significant results.

4. School-Based Success Stories and Continuous Accountability

Off2Class’ model is built on partnership and accountability.

With every district and school we work with, we aim to measure, publish, and learn from results — not just once, but continuously.

Our goal is to help partners see measurable growth in student achievement and to keep refining our platform through transparent evidence-sharing.

As more partnerships adopt the Off2Class model, we will continue to document and share school-based success stories, ensuring that every collaboration contributes to our shared understanding of what drives effective language instruction.

5. Additional Supporting Evidence (Contextual Studies)

While our strongest evidence now stems from the RCT and focus group findings, earlier studies and surveys also support Off2Class’s impact:

  • Placement Test Validation: A pilot study with 154 adult learners found a strong correlation (r = .68, p < .05) between Off2Class’s Placement Test and TOEFL scores.
  • Teacher Time Savings: A 2023 survey of 500+ educators found that Off2Class saved teachers an average of 12.5 hours per week, enabling more focus on direct instruction.
  • Student Engagement: In a 2025 survey of 1,000+ educators, 59% reported that student engagement had increased in their classrooms since using Off2Class.
  • Teacher Preparedness: The same survey found that over 60% of educators felt more prepared for their lessons after using Off2Class.

6. Why This Matters

By centering our evidence on causally verified student outcomes, authentic classroom voices, and independent validation, Off2Class remains a trusted, research-backed solution for improving multilingual learner achievement.

Our ongoing commitment to data transparency ensures that we stay accountable to the educators and students we serve.
