Skills in Lessons, Search, Placement Tests and Independent Practice (homework)

You can now see the skills behind every Off2Class lesson, placement test question and independent practice (homework) question, search the Lesson Library by skill and use what students' answers show you to find the lessons they need next.

What changed

We've tagged every lesson, placement test question and independent practice (homework) question in Off2Class to the specific skills it teaches or assesses. This work is the groundwork for student progress tracking, coming in 2027. It also powers four features you can use today:

Skills on every lesson card. Select Skills on a lesson card to see the skills that lesson covers.

A Skills filter in the Lesson Library. Search the list of skills, check the ones you're looking for and see the lessons that cover them. Each skill shows its proficiency level, so you can match lessons to where your students are.

Skills on the Placement Test results screen. Each question in a student's results now shows the skill it assesses, right next to the student's response. Skills for the grammar section of the Adaptive Placement Test will roll out in November.

Skills on independent practice (homework) questions. When you review a student's independent practice (homework), each question shows the skill it practices.

Why it matters

For teachers: Skills show you what students will practice in a lesson, so you can pick the right one for your class faster. They also make it easy to find targeted practice for a small group alongside your whole-class lessons.

These features work best together. Say a student's placement test shows several missed questions tied to the same skill. Take that skill to the Skills filter and you'll have a short list of lessons that target it. Use that list alongside the lesson recommendations already on the results screen.

Independent practice (homework) keeps that picture current through the year. If the same skill keeps showing up in a student's missed independent practice (homework) questions, you'll know what to reteach or which lesson to assign next.

For coordinators: Skills give you and your teachers common terms for what students are learning. Placement test results and independent practice (homework) show the skill behind each answer, so grouping and intervention decisions can rest on specific skills as well as proficiency levels. And when a school leader or curriculum committee asks what students practice in a given lesson, the Skills button has the answer.

How to use it

In the Lesson Library, select Skills on any lesson card, or open the Skills filter to search by skill. To see question-level skills, open a student's placement test results or independent practice (homework) and review their responses.
